Every organisation that runs its own hardware eventually reaches the same point. The servers still switch on, but the warranty has lapsed, the support contract costs more than the workload justifies, and the rack is drawing power for capacity nobody is using. At that stage the equipment stops being an asset and starts being a liability sitting in a comms room.
Server scrap is what those machines become once they leave production. The term covers complete rack units and blade chassis, stripped frames with the drives pulled out, loose processors and memory, storage arrays, switches, PDUs, and the cabinets they were bolted into. Some of it retains resale value. Most of it is valued on the metals and boards inside. Both routes need the same starting point, which is an accurate inventory and a clear decision about what happens to the data.
Businesses replace servers for reasons that have very little to do with failure. Refresh cycles have actually lengthened over the past decade. Omdia's survey work put the average enterprise server in service for around 5.4 years by 2022, and the large cloud operators moved their own depreciation schedules from three or four years out to five and six. What triggers a clear-out is usually something else: a virtualisation project that collapses forty physical machines into six, a move to colocation or cloud, an office relocation, a lease return, a merger, or a landlord who wants the comms room back.
Where those machines end up matters. Servers contain leaded solder, brominated flame retardants in the plastics, battery cells on the RAID cards, and boards that release contaminants when burned or crushed without controls. They also contain copper, aluminium, steel, gold, silver and palladium in recoverable quantities. The UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2024 put the metals embedded in the world's 2022 e-waste at roughly USD 91 billion, with only 22.3 percent of the total mass documented as formally collected and recycled. Nearly four fifths of it went somewhere else.

What is server scrap?
Server scrap is not a single product. Valuation and handling both change depending on the form factor, so it helps to be specific about what is actually sitting in the rack.
Rack servers
The flat 1U and 2U units that mount horizontally on rails. Dell PowerEdge R-series and HPE ProLiant DL-series are the ones we see most often in UAE offices and small data halls. The most common category by volume, and the easiest to assess because the model number tells you most of what you need to know.
Blade servers
Thin vertical cards inside a shared chassis that supplies power, cooling and network fabric. HPE BladeSystem, Dell PowerEdge M-series and Cisco UCS installations turn up regularly. Chassis and blades are valued separately, since a populated enclosure and an empty one are very different items.
Tower servers
Desktop-shaped units common in branch offices, clinics, schools and smaller manufacturing sites. Lenovo ThinkSystem and Fujitsu PRIMERGY towers are frequent finds. Lower unit value, but they arrive in quantity when a company standardises its branches.
Enterprise servers
The heavier four-socket and eight-socket systems, along with legacy IBM Power and Oracle SPARC hardware retired from database and ERP duty. Dense, heavy, and often still worth something as parts rather than pure material.
Storage servers
SAN and NAS arrays, disk shelves and JBOD enclosures from Dell EMC, NetApp and HPE. These carry the highest data risk on any site, because a single shelf can hold dozens of drives.
Network servers
In practice, the switching, routing and appliance layer that sits alongside the compute: Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switches, ASR and ISR routers, firewalls and load balancers. Supermicro appears throughout all of these categories, particularly in white-box and hosting environments.

Types of server equipment we buy
The following are assessed as part of a bulk lot. Condition affects the price, not whether we accept the equipment.
Complete units
- Used servers. Working units pulled from production during a refresh. Strongest values, because parts of the lot may be resellable.
- Damaged servers. Dented, water affected, or units with failed components. Purchased and valued on recoverable material.
- Non-working servers. Machines that no longer POST or have been cannibalised for spares. Boards, heatsinks and chassis metal remain recoverable.
- Data centre servers. Full or partial rack decommissions, including cabling, rails and cable management arms.
Enclosures and structure
- Rack cabinets. 42U and 47U enclosures, doors, side panels and mounting hardware. Bulky, but the steel content is significant.
- Server chassis. Empty or stripped frames, blade enclosures and midplanes.
- Power supplies. Redundant server PSUs and rack PDUs. Copper windings make these worth separating rather than shredding whole.
- Supporting infrastructure. UPS units, transfer switches, KVM consoles and rail kits removed with the rack.
Components
- Server processors. Xeon, EPYC, Opteron and older Itanium and SPARC CPUs, graded separately because gold sits in the pins, lids and substrate.
- RAM modules. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 registered and load-reduced DIMMs, sorted by generation and capacity.
- RAID cards. Controllers, HBAs and cache modules with battery or supercapacitor backup, which need removal before shredding.
- Server motherboards. High grade boards, valued on component population rather than surface area.
Storage and network
- Hard drives. SAS, SATA and older SCSI drives. Every unit passes through data handling before anything else happens to it.
- SSDs. SATA, SAS and NVMe drives including U.2 and M.2. Treated under a separate sanitisation route from spinning disks.
- Networking hardware. Switches, routers, firewalls, transceivers, patch panels and structured cabling.
- Storage equipment. Arrays, disk shelves, tape libraries, LTO cartridges and fibre channel components.

Our server scrap buying process
Assessment
Send an equipment list with model numbers, quantities and rough condition. Photographs of the rack fronts and asset tags help more than most people expect. For larger lots, or where the list is incomplete, we arrange a site visit and count it ourselves. Nothing is quoted blind.
Quotation
Pricing is built from three inputs: the resale potential of any working units, the weight and grade of recoverable material, and current commodity rates for copper, aluminium, steel and precious metals. Those rates move, so quotes carry a validity window. You receive a written figure against the itemised list, not a range.
Pickup
Once the quote is accepted we schedule collection through our pickup request service. For live environments we work around your operational calendar, including evenings and weekends where rack removal would otherwise disrupt users. Loading dock access, lift capacity and floor loading are confirmed before a vehicle is dispatched, because these are the things that turn a two hour job into a full day.
Secure transportation
Equipment is inventoried at the point of loading against the agreed list, sealed, and moved under a chain of custody record. Serial numbers on data bearing devices are captured before the vehicle leaves. If your policy requires a witness from your side to travel with the load, that can be arranged.
Data destruction
Storage media is sanitised or physically destroyed using the method agreed at quotation stage. This can happen at your site before the equipment leaves, or at our facility, depending on your risk position. Full detail in the secure data destruction section below.
Sorting
Units are dismantled and separated into material streams. Batteries, capacitors and any mercury containing components are removed first as hazardous fractions. Boards are graded by population. Metals are separated by type rather than mixed, because mixed loads recover less.
Recycling
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals go to smelting and refining channels. Circuit boards go to specialist recovery. Plastics are separated by polymer where volume justifies it. Working components that pass functional testing may be routed to resale through IT asset remarketing, which usually returns more to you than scrapping the same unit.
Documentation
You receive a certificate of destruction listing the serial numbers of every data bearing device processed, plus a collection record and material summary for your environmental and audit files. Keep these. They are what an auditor asks for, and the only proof that the equipment left your premises through a controlled route.

Environmental responsibility
A rack of servers put into general waste takes leaded solder, flame retardants and heavy metals into landfill. Controlled dismantling keeps those fractions in the hazardous stream where they belong.
Electronic waste reduction
E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste categories globally. The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 recorded 62 million tonnes generated in 2022, rising roughly 2.6 million tonnes a year and projected to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030. Enterprise IT is a heavy contributor by weight, because servers, racks and storage arrays are dense.
Resource recovery
Circuit boards, connectors and processors carry gold, silver, palladium and copper in concentrations that make recovery worthwhile. Recycling these back into supply reduces demand for primary ore extraction. The same 2024 report valued the copper in one year of global e-waste at around USD 19 billion and the gold at USD 15 billion.
Legal compliance
Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management sets the framework for waste handling in the UAE, including segregation and treatment of hazardous waste under the supervision of the competent authority in each emirate. Cross border movement of hazardous waste requires written permission from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, consistent with the Basel Convention. Using an unlicensed collector does not transfer that responsibility away from you.
Data security
A retired server is a data breach waiting for someone to buy it at auction. Controlled disposal closes that exposure, which is the single most common reason UAE finance, healthcare and government clients start the conversation.
Storage space savings
Comms rooms and store rooms in Dubai and Abu Dhabi cost real money per square metre. Equipment awaiting a disposal decision often occupies that space for years.

Secure data destruction for server scrap buyers and sellers
This is where most disposal projects succeed or fail, and where the technical detail matters. The reference standard is NIST SP 800-88, Guidelines for Media Sanitization. It defines three levels of sanitisation, and the correct choice depends on the media type and the sensitivity of the data.

Hard drive destruction
Magnetic drives can be sanitised logically or destroyed physically. A single verified overwrite pass meets the Clear level on a magnetic drive. Multi pass overwriting is a habit inherited from the old DoD 5220.22-M convention, and the Department of Defense removed those overwrite specifications from its own operating manual back in 2006. If a buyer is still selling you seven pass military grade wiping as a premium feature, they are quoting a withdrawn standard.
SSD destruction
Solid state drives cannot be reliably sanitised by overwriting at all. Wear levelling spreads writes across physical cells that do not map predictably to logical addresses, and over-provisioned regions stay out of reach of any overwrite tool. No number of passes fixes this. The defensible routes for flash media are the drive's own firmware sanitise command, cryptographic erase where AES encryption was active from first use, or physical destruction. We default to destruction for SSDs unless you specifically request and can verify a crypto erase path. Details are set out in NIST SP 800-88.
Certified wiping
Where drives are sanitised rather than shredded, each device is processed individually and the result is verified and logged against its serial number. A wipe with no verification record is not evidence of anything.
Data privacy
The UAE Personal Data Protection Law, Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, requires controllers and processors to apply appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including at the point of disposal. Note that the DIFC and ADGM sit outside the federal law and operate their own regimes, DIFC Data Protection Law No. 5 of 2020 and the ADGM Data Protection Regulations 2021. If your entity is registered in either free zone, your disposal documentation needs to satisfy that regime instead.
Business confidentiality
Personal data is only part of the exposure. Retired servers hold contract files, pricing models, source code, patient records, credit files and internal correspondence. None of that is covered by data protection law, and all of it is damaging in the wrong hands.
Compliance with applicable regulations
We will tell you plainly what documentation we can provide and what it covers. Ask the same question of every buyer you speak to. Request the trade licence, the waste transport approvals for the emirate you are in, and a sample certificate of destruction before anyone reverses a truck up to your loading bay. A buyer who cannot produce those on request is not a buyer you want holding your drives.

Materials recovered from server scrap
Steel
Chassis, rails, rack frames and enclosure panels. The highest fraction by weight in almost any server lot, and the reason cabinets are worth collecting even when they look like empty boxes.
Aluminium
Heatsinks, drive caddies, blade carriers and structural brackets.
Copper
Power supply windings, busbars, internal wiring looms, network cabling and heat pipes. Usually the highest value base metal in a server lot.
Gold
Present as thin plating on connector contacts, PCB edge fingers, processor pins and lids. Quantities per unit are small. Across a full rack decommission they are not.
Silver
Found in solder alloys, contacts and some board coatings.
Palladium
Used in multilayer ceramic capacitors and certain connector platings. Recovered at the refining stage rather than by hand sorting.
Circuit boards
Motherboards, backplanes, RAID controllers and memory modules, graded by component density before recovery, since a populated server board and a bare backplane are not the same material.
Plastic
Bezels, fan shrouds, cable management arms and drive trays, separated by polymer type where volumes allow.
What actually gets recovered depends on the equipment. A rack of storage shelves is mostly steel and drives. A pallet of processors and memory is mostly board and precious metal. This is exactly why a quote against an itemised list is more accurate than a per kilo figure quoted over the phone.
